About the Campaign

Freedom From Oil works to end America’s oil addiction and to stop global climate change by convincing the auto industry to dramatically improve fuel efficiency and to eliminate greenhouse gases from its fleet. We started in 2003 as a join project between Rainforest Action Network, Global Exchange, and The Ruckus Society. Originally called Jumpstart Ford - in 2007 we expanded our campaign to address the entire auto industry.

Rainforest Action Network

Rainforest Action Network campaigns for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain them. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign to transform the global marketplace. Inspired by revolutionary acts of peaceful protest like the Boston Tea Party, our campaign model has helped birth a new breed of activism and unleashed the purchasing power of consumer democracy. As a result, Citigroup, Bank of America, Boise Cascade, Home Depot, and hundreds of others have all adopted progressive environmental policies that set new best practices in their industries. Global Exchange

Global Exchange is a membership-based international human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice around the world. Since our founding in 1988, we have successfully increased public awareness of root causes of injustice while building international partnerships and mobilizing for change. Whether it is US companies such as Nike abusing the women who make its shoes, the US government fueling an illegal, unjustified, murderous war in Iraq, or the World Trade Organization (WTO) undercutting consumer and environmental protections, Global Exchange offers itself as a partner for peace and social justice. Learn more at www.GlobalExchange.org.

Ruckus Society

Ruckus Society provides environmental, human rights, and social justice organizers with the tools, training, and support needed to achieve their goals.  Working with a broad range of communities, organizations, and movements - from high school students to professional organizations - Ruckus facilitates the sharing of information and expertise that strengthens the capacity to change our relationship with the environment and each other. We believe building partnerships with organizers and communities to create spaces for participatory learning, networking, and resource sharing is the most powerful way we as individuals can contribute to actualizing positive social change.
