Most of our oil consumption is for transportation, and the single biggest reason we consume so much is the gas guzzling cars, trucks and SUV's on the road today. It’s time for one of the major automakers to break away from the pack and lead an ecological U-turn in the auto industry, steering away from oil-addicted gas guzzlers and toward pollution-free, petroleum-free transportation.
Detroit has been building on the same basic technology – the internal combustion engine – for the last century. In order to stay in business in the coming century, to protect good union jobs and to ensure stable, long-term dividends for their shareholders, automakers must break their oil addiction and offer consumers transportation choices that don’t harm our health, destroy our environment, or send our children to war.
